Improving your skill set

In today’s fast pace and competitive environment it is important to keep improving one’s skills. Skills ranging from personal skills to professional skills even leadership skills. Skills are the ability to better oneself, both in your personal and professional life.

Before one can better one’s professional skills one must first work on your own personal skills. Personal skills to improve will be communication, emotions, self-esteem and self-motivation. To improve your communication skills you will need to be a good listener. When someone is talking to you no matter what the subject is about it is important to listen and show that you are listening by using interjections to punctuate your listening. Also don’t interrupt when the person is talking. If possible show sympathy or even empathy if you have had the same experience. It is also important when communicating to make eye contact and also make use of gestures when speaking to someone. Your facial and body language is also important part when it comes to communicating. It is no use having a serious conversation but you are laughing. Choose to be honest, patient, optimistic, sincere, respectful, and accepting of others. Be sensitive to other people's feelings, and believe in others' competence.

When it comes to emotions and self-esteem it is imperative that you keep your emotions in check, be kind; don’t lose your temper too easily. Be self-confident in yourself because you are a unique individual and there is only one of you so don’t let others judge you or bring you down. Also motivate yourself and even challenge yourself. By challenging yourself you can keep improving yourself.

Improving your personal skills will help you better you professional skills. There are a vast amount of skills to improve and this will also be categorized according to your profession. But in this article we will focus on skills that will be required in your everyday lives.

The first one will be critical thinking which is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. The next one is complex problem solving which consists of using generic or ad hoc methods, in an orderly manner, for finding solutions to problems. Judgment and Decision-Making is also important (considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate ones).It is important to be able to make the right decisions even if there are little or no information available. This is also where confidence comes in to play by having confidence in yourself and your knowledge you will be capable of making quick and easy decisions. Active Listening is another important professional skill to improve. Understanding what people are saying, listening to them, asking questions when necessary and not interrupting is all important. Knowledge about technology is also an important factor in professional skills. Having knowledge about today’s technology is a valuable skill to have since most industries makes use of the latest technologies in their day to day operations. Operations and Systems Analysis: Determining how a system or operation should work and how changes in conditions, operations and environments will affect outcomes. And last but not least is building relationships within and outside of the work place. By building a relationship with your colleagues your work environment will be a safe and enjoyable place.

The final skill will be leadership skills. Some leaders are born and some are created from years of experience. Key to a professional’s success is learning how to empower, inspire and motivate others, to build a vision that’s compelling and to engender trust, loyalty and support from others to strive toward that vision. Leadership is a skill that can be taught. As a leader it is important to know how to delegate work, handle conflicts and also be disciplined.

It is imperative to improve your skills, since it affects our daily lives both within the working environment and our personal lives. You just need to be motivated and have a passion for what it is you’re doing. By improving your skills it has a direct impact on you and your working environment. It can be an advantage to your company and to you which can lead to profits and promotions.
